Before KITT was created, a model vehicle was developed by FLAG (Foundation for Law and Government) and was given the name Knight Automated Roving Robot (Knight Rider KARR).

The Knight Rider KARR was very similar to KITT, but lacked one very important concept, the ability to protect human life. Once the Knight Rider KARR was activated, its primary directive was to protect its own survival, at all costs. Once FLAG realized their mistake with the car, the Knight Rider KARR was deactivated immediately but never eliminated. Years later, some crooks inadvertently activated it and it became a prevailing opponent to Michael and KITT (KITT vs. KARR). Today, the model styles KITT and KARR have been long sought-after for car collectors and huge Knight Rider fans.
